Synopsis
In the last years of Roman Britain, a mortally wounded Arthur dictates his memoirs to a friar after his final battle. He recalls boyhood, when he watches Ambrosius take command of the Roman legions and Merlin gives him a glimpse of the future. Captured by the Prydn, a small people the legends call faerie folk, he learns humility as well as strength, takes the name Belrix, marries Morgana and fathers a son. Driven by ambition, he fights the Saxons and becomes king, then marries Guenevere. He is pulled between love and family on one side and his drive to make himself Emperor of Britain on the other. The book treats the legend mainly as politics, with magic limited to Merlin's prophecy.
