Synopsis
The fourth book in Ian C. Esslemont's Path to Ascendancy prequel sequence finds Malazan forces closing in on the Quon Talian mainland as Emperor Kellanved orders a new campaign to invade the island theocracy of Falar, a religiously governed state that has so far resisted absorption into his growing realm. During the campaign, a ragtag Malazan army encounters an ancient and genuinely terrifying threat that draws in the still-untested High Mage Tayschrenn, forcing him to confront dangers well beyond anything his training so far has prepared him for, in a campaign that will shape the High Mage he eventually becomes.
