Synopsis

Cefwyn is now king of Ylesuin, and has brought Tristen to his capital at Guelemara, where the Quinalt priests regard the wizard-shaped young man as an abomination and the court's lords see in him a foreign influence on the throne. Cefwyn's marriage to Ninévrisë, heir to the Elwynim kingdom across the river, which he means to bring into alliance rather than war, is resisted by his own barons, and the king, who loves his friend, must send him away for the sake of the realm: Tristen is made Duke of Amefel and dispatched to the border province he first came to, where the old powers of the land, the Sihhë who ruled before men, stir at his return. Meanwhile Hasufin, defeated at the end of the first book, has not been destroyed, only displaced, and his reach into the court of the enemy grows.

Notes

  • From the series record (Fortress): C. J. Cherryh's high fantasy of Tristen, a young man Summoned into being by a dying wizard, and Cefwyn, the king who befriends him, in the kingdom of Ylesuin: a quartet (1995-2000) and a fifth novel about the next generation (2006). Cherryh distinguishes wizardry (learned), sorcery (force of character) and magic (born gift).
