Overview
C. J. Cherryh's Fortress novels (1995-2006) are her major work of high fantasy, set in the kingdom of Ylesuin and the troubled lands across its river. Tristen is Summoned into being by the dying wizard Mauryl as a weapon against the sorcerer Hasufin: a young man with an adult body, a child's knowledge and the buried memory of a Sihhë king, who learns the world word by word as things 'unfold' to him. Cefwyn, the prince and then king who befriends him, must keep both his throne and his friend as the court recoils from what Tristen is. The quartet (1995-2000) carries their story through politics, marriage and war to the defeat of Hasufin; Fortress of Ice (2006) turns to Cefwyn's two sons a generation later. Cherryh's magic distinguishes wizardry, learned like a craft, from sorcery, a force of character, and from magic, a born gift. A separate world from her Morgaine and Rusalka books.
