Synopsis

A generation on, the kingdom is at peace, and the story turns to the next one: Cefwyn's two sons, Aewyn, his heir by Ninévrisë, and Elfwyn, called Otter, his natural son by the Aswydd witch Tarien, raised in secret in Amefel under Tristen's protection, half-brothers who become friends when Otter is brought to court for the first time. But Otter's mother is a sorceress imprisoned in a tower, his blood carries the old Aswydd power, and the forces that fought over Tristen two decades earlier have found a new generation to work through. When the boy flees the court in winter, the brothers' loyalty to each other, Cefwyn's to both his sons and Tristen's to the boy he has sheltered are all tested on the ice of the frozen river. The fifth and last novel, written after a six-year gap.

Where it sits

  • Universe: Fortress
  • Series: Fortress core; position 5 of 5 in the series' recorded order
  • Author: C.J. Cherryh

Notes

  • From the series record (Fortress): C. J. Cherryh's high fantasy of Tristen, a young man Summoned into being by a dying wizard, and Cefwyn, the king who befriends him, in the kingdom of Ylesuin: a quartet (1995-2000) and a fifth novel about the next generation (2006). Cherryh distinguishes wizardry (learned), sorcery (force of character) and magic (born gift).
