Synopsis
The war comes. Cefwyn marches north into Elwynor to win his wife's throne back from the rebel lords, while Tristen, now openly a Sihhë lord in all but name, holds the south and the border and must decide how much of what he was before his Summoning he will let himself become. Hasufin's long game is at last in the open: the sorcerer who has waited through centuries and through other men's bodies for the Sihhë power to come within his reach makes his move at Ilefínian, the Elwynim capital, and the friends must fight on two fronts, Cefwyn's with armies and Tristen's with the magic that terrifies the men he is defending. The fourth novel completes the story begun in Fortress in the Eye of Time and was, for six years, the series' conclusion.
Where it sits
- Universe: Fortress
- Series: Fortress core; position 4 of 5 in the series' recorded order
- Author: C.J. Cherryh
Notes
- From the series record (Fortress): C. J. Cherryh's high fantasy of Tristen, a young man Summoned into being by a dying wizard, and Cefwyn, the king who befriends him, in the kingdom of Ylesuin: a quartet (1995-2000) and a fifth novel about the next generation (2006). Cherryh distinguishes wizardry (learned), sorcery (force of character) and magic (born gift).
