Overview
A completed high-fantasy trilogy set in the Elder Isles, a lost archipelago off the coast of medieval France, its warring kingdoms threaded through with faerie magic, sorcery, and political intrigue in Jack Vance's characteristically ornate, ironic prose. The story follows several interwoven threads across the kingdoms of Lyonesse, Troicinet, and South Ulfland: Princess Suldrun and Prince Aillas become lovers and have a son, Dhrun, before Aillas is imprisoned; Dhrun is raised among fairies in the enchanted forest of Tantrevalles and later travels with a girl named Glyneth; and Aillas, having claimed kingship over multiple realms, besieges the castle of the sorcerer Duke Carfilhiot, who holds Dhrun and Glyneth captive. A landmark of the genre's more baroque tradition, distinct in world and continuity from Vance's earlier Dying Earth, the trilogy is admired for its dense, patiently unfolding worldbuilding and political intrigue, though its density and multiple plotlines have divided some readers.
