Synopsis

Madouc, the third and final novel of Jack Vance's Lyonesse trilogy, follows Madouc, the quarrelsome and spirited princess of Lyonesse born out of wedlock and raised within King Casmir's court at Haidion. When Madouc learns that she is in fact a changeling, a fairy child swapped at birth for a human infant, she sets out from the castle to uncover the truth of her real origins and true parentage, drawing her into contact with the fairy folk and other strange corners of the Elder Isles. Her journey unfolds even as her uncle, King Casmir, continues his long-running scheme to conquer the island of Hybras and extend Lyonesse's power across the archipelago, a political ambition that runs alongside and periodically crosses paths with Madouc's own quest.

Notes

  • From the series record (Lyonesse): Core Canon = all 3 novels of the completed trilogy (Berkley, 1983; Underwood-Miller, 1985 and 1989). Confirmed a separate, unrelated universe from Vance's The Dying Earth, already in this canon -- different world, different continuity; both records are cross-referenced as being by the same author.
