Synopsis
The novel is told in letters and set during the Chartist movement in nineteenth-century Britain. James Cobham receives a letter from a cousin he had thought was dead and sets out to find him across England. His search draws him into family intrigue, swordfights, magical conspiracies, the occult and secret societies. The book was written by its two authors as letters to each other, each writing in character, with the plot left to develop as the exchange went on.
