Overview
Freedom & Necessity is a standalone historical fantasy by Steven Brust and Emma Bull, published by Tor in 1997. It is set in nineteenth-century Britain during the Chartist movement and is told entirely through letters. James Cobham receives a letter from a cousin he believed dead and searches for him across England, which draws him into family intrigue, swordfights, magical conspiracies, the occult and secret societies. The two authors wrote the novel as letters to each other, each playing characters and letting the story develop as they went. Brust has described it as a Victorian epistolary novel and a fantasy for Hegelians.
