Synopsis
Games Wizards Play, tenth novel in the Young Wizards series, centers on the Invitational, a prestigious competition held once every eleven years in which promising young wizards demonstrate their abilities over three intensive weeks. Experienced wizards Nita, Kit, and Dairine each take on the role of mentor to a newly discovered candidate: Nita and Kit work with Penn Shao-Feng, who specializes in managing solar weather, while Dairine mentors Mehrnaz Farrahi, an apprentice with a gift for handling earthquakes. Friction arises early when Penn's arrogance and dismissive attitude toward Nita strain the mentoring team's cooperation, even as Nita and Kit continue to navigate their own evolving relationship alongside their new responsibilities. Dairine, meanwhile, works to help the more insecure Mehrnaz withstand pressure from powerful relatives pursuing their own agendas through her.
