Synopsis

Beneath a freezing Arctic sky a wolf brings a baby to a remote village, where the people take him in and call him Vulchanok, Little Wolf. He grows into a happy child, but night after night the wolf-witch who saved him walks through his dreams, leads him into the Ghost World and makes him a shaman. The villagers come to fear him, and he grows into a lonely man until a young wolf-witch comes out of the forest and claims him as her mate. Still longing for human company, he searches for visions by firelight in a spinning ice-apple and sees, in a distant city, a girl as lonely as himself, shut in a small room. Taking on his falcon skin, he flies to her window, and Kristiana and Vulchanok soon fall in love; but her brother Glev will never let her marry a rough northern huntsman, and Vulchanok's wolf-wife is fiercely jealous. A gothic romance, the fourth book of the Ghost World sequence.
