Synopsis
A novelette of some 15,000 words, a sequel in Barbara Hambly's Winterlands series to Dragonsbane and its successors, self-published by the author. When a gnome wizard is murdered, the other gnome mages, fearing that the killer was a demon, send for the human witch Jenny Waynest, the partner of John Aversin, the Dragonsbane. Unfortunately, Jenny is away, and the mystery of who killed the gnome, and how, must be faced without her, in the decaying northern world of the Winterlands, where magic is practical and always comes at a cost.
