Overview
A secondary-world fantasy following Jenny Waynest, a hedge-witch of modest power, and Lord John Aversin, the unglamorous, dragon-slaying squire of a remote northern holding menaced by the last dragons and older, darker magics. Barbara Hambly's second universe in this canon (alongside Darwath), confirmed a wholly separate setting with no shared characters or continuity. Dragonsbane (1985), published by Del Rey, was originally a self-contained standalone novel in which a southern prince asks Jenny and John to kill the ancient dragon Morkeleb the Black, weaving dragon-slaying together with court intrigue and Jenny's own temptation to give up her humanity for greater magical power; it was nominated for the Locus Award in both 1986 and 1987. Reviewers praised Hambly's subversion of dragon-slaying tropes, noting that her hero fights only with great reluctance and by any means necessary. Three further novels and a novella followed 14 or more years later.
