Overview
Patricia A. McKillip's 2004 novel is set in Raine, a kingdom at the edge of the world whose royal library fills the cliffs beneath the palace. Nepenthe, an orphan translator found as a baby among thorns, is given a book written in an alphabet of thorns that no one can read, on the day the reluctant young queen Tessera is crowned; as she deciphers it, the epic of the conqueror Axis and his sorceress Kane winds itself out of the past and into the present, and the fate of Raine turns on her reading. A story about the magic of words and of obsession, a Mythopoeic Award finalist, and a separate world from McKillip's other universes in this canon.
