Overview
Patricia A. McKillip's 1995 novel begins with a mage's worst mistake: to end a siege, Atrix Wolfe shaped a Hunter, a warrior with no allegiance but to death, which destroyed both armies and the king he served. Twenty years later, living as a wolf in the mountains, he is summoned by the Queen of the Wood, ruler of the timeless realm beside the human one, to find her daughter, lost since that night. The slain king's son Talis, home with a spellbook whose words never mean what they seem, and Saro, a mute scullery girl in the castle kitchens, are drawn into the same old wrong. A Mythopoeic Award finalist and a separate world from McKillip's other universes here.
