Synopsis
Twenty years ago, when the prince of Kardeth would not lift his siege of Pelucir, the great mage Atrix Wolfe shaped a spell to end the war, and in his fury made something worse than war: a Hunter, a warrior with no allegiance but to death, who destroyed both armies and killed the king of Pelucir before vanishing. Appalled at what he had done, Atrix fled to the mountains to live in wolf shape among wolves. Now the Queen of the Wood, ruler of the timeless realm beside the human one, summons him and demands that he find her daughter, lost since the night of the massacre. Meanwhile Talis, the slain king's son, home from the mages' school with a spellbook whose words never mean what they seem, and Saro, a mute scullery girl of unknown origin, are drawn into the same old wrong.
