Synopsis
Verity's brother Alex takes center stage as he manages a reptile house at a zoo while investigating strange occurrences tied to a cryptid mystery. Working as a herpetologist, Alex has taken a position caring for the Columbus Zoo's reptile collection, using the job as cover to study reptilian cryptids such as gorgons living quietly among the local community. When a string of petrifications begins troubling the area, Alex is drawn into investigating the cause while trying to keep his family's cryptozoological work secret from his colleague and budding love interest, Shelby Tanner, a zookeeper with her own reasons to be wary of what is really happening among the zoo's more unusual residents.
Where it sits
- Universe: InCryptid
- Series: InCryptid core; position 3 of 15 in the series' recorded order
- Author: Seanan McGuire
Notes
- From the series record (InCryptid): Multi-generation cryptozoologist family (the Prices/Hayleighs) vs. the Covenant of St. George; DAW. A 16th novel is anticipated by some third-party listings but is not announced on the author's own bibliography page, and is not registered (Article 2). McGuire has also published 50+ further InCryptid short stories/novellas (anthologies, bonus content, Patreon); deliberately deferred as Expanded Canon out of scope, per the same scale-driven deferral this project already applied to Oz's Famous Forty continuation books.
Neighbouring works
Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.
- Publication order, within the series InCryptid: position 3 of 15: previous Midnight Blue-Light Special (2013) · next Pocket Apocalypse (2015)
