Synopsis

Harmattan Season follows Boubacar, a mixed-race private investigator in a French-colonized West African nation, haunted by war crimes he committed while serving in a collaborationist military unit during an earlier conflict. When an injured woman stumbles into his apartment one night, Boubacar hides her from the colonial police, but she vanishes soon after, and her body is later discovered inexplicably levitating in a public square, missing several organs. A police officer named Moussa reveals that hers is the sixth such case, and that every victim has come from the colony's oppressed native population, drawing Boubacar into an investigation of organ trafficking that connects uncomfortably to cargo he has been paid to deliver to a mysterious warehouse. His inquiry becomes entangled with a political candidate campaigning against colonial rule and pushing for a Truth and Reconciliation Commission, setting the noir mystery against a backdrop of colonial violence and unresolved guilt.
