Overview
Harmattan Season is a 2025 standalone fantasy-noir novel by Tochi Onyebuchi, a hardboiled detective story set in an unnamed West African country under French colonial occupation. Boubacar, a former soldier turned private investigator, is drawn into a murder case that exposes the buried violence of the occupying regime's magic-suppressing policies and the compromises colonized and colonizer alike have made to survive them. Onyebuchi filters the genre conventions of noir, a cynical detective, a corrupt administration, secrets that implicate everyone with power, through a specifically colonial setting, using the detective plot to surface a history of violence the occupation would rather keep hidden. The novel continues Onyebuchi's recurring interest in the intersection of state violence and fantastical premises, seen elsewhere in his young-adult duology Beasts Made of Night. No sequel to Harmattan Season had been announced as of this research pass.
