Synopsis
Picking up after the events at Canaan House, this second volume follows Harrowhark Nonagesimus, now the last necromancer of the Ninth House, after her ascension to Lyctorhood under the Emperor. Installed on his space station, the Mithraeum, alongside senior Lyctors including the volatile Mercymorn and the flippant Augustine, Harrow is meant to complete her training and join the Emperor's fight, but her ascension proves incomplete: she is plagued by fractured memories and hallucinations that undermine her control of her new powers. The Lyctors face relentless Resurrection Beasts, deadly manifestations tied to the worlds destroyed to create the Emperor's empire, even as a second, contradictory version of recent events unfolds alongside Harrow's own fraying recollections, leaving her uncertain of what actually happened to her closest companion.
