Synopsis
Set on the planet Darkover, this novel centers on Regis Hastur, the planetary Regent, whose stability is shaken when a previously unknown half-brother, Rinaldo, arrives from a monastery. Rinaldo, a fervent cristoforo fundamentalist, allies with the Terran-born Tiphani Lawton, who shares his rigid religious convictions, and together they found the Chapel of All Worlds, pushing their doctrine onto Darkovan society through increasingly extreme methods, including taking Comyn children from their families for indoctrination. When Regis's companion Danilo is kidnapped as political leverage, Regis is forced to abdicate, and Rinaldo takes power while Tiphani's grip on reality frays. The novel builds toward a confrontation between the two brothers over the fate of the missing children and the future of Darkover's fragile religious and political order.
