Deborah J. Ross is an American author of science fiction and fantasy, born in April 1947 and a 1973 graduate of Portland State University. She is best known for her extensive work within the Darkover universe, a science fantasy setting originally created by Marion Zimmer Bradley, which she began collaborating on before Bradley's death in 1999 and has continued to write and edit since. Her Darkover collaborations with Bradley include the Clingfire Trilogy — The Fall of Neskaya (2001), Zandru's Forge (2003), and A Flame in Hali (2004) — and she has since authored further installments in the modern Darkover series, including The Alton Gift (2007), The Children of Kings (2013), Hastur Lord, Thunderlord! (2010–2016), and The Laran Gambit (2022), as well as editing multiple Darkover anthologies. Beyond Darkover, Ross has written original novels including Jaydium (1993) and Northlight (1995), and the Seven-Petaled Shield trilogy (2013–2014), an epic fantasy independent of the Darkover setting. She has also edited and contributed to the Lace and Blade story collections between 2008 and 2019, which gather sword-and-sorcery and romantic adventure fiction from multiple authors. Ross remains one of the primary stewards of the Darkover literary legacy, continuing to shape and expand the setting for new generations of readers.
