Synopsis

Set generations after an earlier period of upheaval on Darkover, this novel follows Gwynn, a man who lost his family in that conflict and now seeks revenge against the rival kingdom of Aldaran. His plan hinges on marriage: he seeks out Kyria, a woman whose bloodline carries the rare gift of controlling storms, hoping that a child of theirs will inherit that power and one day be turned against Aldaran. Kyria, drawn by Gwynn's wealth and standing, agrees to the match, but on her journey through the mountains to their wedding at Scathfell she meets Edric, heir to Aldaran, who carries the same dangerous storm-calling gift and has been warned of its perils. Their unexpected connection raises the possibility that two long-hostile kingdoms might be drawn together instead of driven further apart.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.
