Synopsis
In the seventh book of the Shadows of the Apt series, Tynisa attempts to outrun her own inner turmoil, only to find that her troubled past, and the specter of her dead father, will not let her go, even as the Dragonfly Commonweal continues to fracture around her. Elsewhere, the Wasp Empire turns its military attention toward Khanaphes, an ancient and historically significant city, with ordinary soldiers pursuing territorial gain and personal glory even as the young Empress Seda pursues a far more ambitious goal, viewing herself as heir to powers far older than the Empire itself. As these separate threads develop, the fate of Khanaphes and the deeper ambitions driving Seda's actions set the stage for the conflicts that follow in the remainder of the series.
