Synopsis
In the sixth book of the Shadows of the Apt series, a fragile peace holds over Collegium, but Stenwold Maker remains convinced that the Wasp Empire will inevitably return to finish what it started. While he works to shore up the city's defenses against that renewed threat, a quieter danger is already at work from within, as ships leaving Collegium's harbor come under attack from pirates or simply vanish without explanation. Misled by reassuring propaganda and false promises of safety, several of Stenwold's former allies begin to distance themselves from him, leaving him increasingly isolated even as the Empire watches and waits for a sign of weakness to exploit. Beyond the looming threat of imperial invasion, something else entirely is gathering beneath the surface, a force that even Collegium's military strength and technological advantages may struggle to withstand.
