Synopsis

The fifth book of the Shadows of the Apt series opens in the aftermath of a costly war between the Lowlands and the Wasp Empire that has ended in an uneasy stalemate, leaving Collegium with little to show beyond its wounded veterans. Among them is Cheerwell Maker, left broken in ways no physician can fully treat and haunted by what she has been through. Elsewhere, the Wasp Empress works to reassert control over imperial territories that had begun to slip from her grasp, drawing on a source of power considerably more sinister than simple armies and war machines. Only her consort, the former imperial spymaster Thalric, understands the truth behind that power, even as assassins move against him and his own loyalties come under renewed strain, while far off in an ancient desert city, something long buried begins to stir.
