Synopsis
Sisters Kay and Liza Franklin, who are not their real names, run away from home after their stepfather, who abused Kay when she was younger, begins to turn on Liza. They settle in an abandoned farmhouse in Britt, a small town in West Texas, and persuade the townspeople that they are cousins of the house's absent owner. The house is also home to Hobkin, a brownie who came to Texas with an early English settler and is tied to the place. With his help, and with the neighbours and animals they meet, the girls begin to build a new life and to hope that their mother can join them.
