Synopsis
Howl's Moving Castle opens with Sophie Hatter, an eighteen-year-old eldest daughter in the magical kingdom of Ingary, resigned by custom to a quiet life running her late father's hat shop rather than seeking adventure, which storybook logic in her world reserves for youngest children. Her ordinary existence ends when the feared Witch of the Waste, offended by an unremarkable encounter, transforms Sophie into an elderly woman and forbids her from telling anyone what has happened. Unable to explain her new appearance, Sophie leaves home and talks her way into a job as a cleaner in the wandering castle of Howl, a wizard with a reputation for stealing girls' hearts. There she strikes a bargain with Calcifer, Howl's fire demon, who offers to restore her youth if she can help him break the contract binding him to the wizard.
Where it sits
- Universe: Howl's Moving Castle
- Series: Howl's Moving Castle core; position 1 of 3 in the series' recorded order
- Author: Diana Wynne Jones
Awards (verified)
- Boston Globe-Horn Book Award (Fiction (Honor Book)), 1986: honor; Corrected from a widely-repeated secondary-source 'win' claim -- the awarding body's own history page lists it as a Fiction Honor Book, not the category winner (In Summer Light by Zibby Oneal won).
Notes
- From the series record (Howl's Moving Castle): Diana Wynne Jones's own 'Castle'/'World of Howl' trilogy, sharing the kingdom of Ingary and recurring characters (Howl, Sophie, Calcifer, Wizard Suliman) across all 3 books, though each has a largely independent plot and protagonist. Confirmed a SEPARATE continuity from Jones's Chrestomanci series (a different multiverse-hopping premise with no shared characters, setting, or crossover) -- not conflated per this admission's own scope check.
