Overview
Diana Wynne Jones's Howl's Moving Castle trilogy follows Sophie Hatter, cursed into an old woman's body, who takes refuge with the vain and capricious wizard Howl in his magical, mobile castle: a foundational, wittily subversive work of British children's fantasy, sharing the kingdom of Ingary and recurring characters across all three books. The trilogy opens with Howl's Moving Castle (1986) and continues through Castle in the Air (1990) and House of Many Ways (2008), each shifting focus to different corners of Ingary and its neighboring lands while Sophie, Howl and the fire demon Calcifer recur throughout. The first novel was adapted by Studio Ghibli into a 2004 animated feature directed by Hayao Miyazaki, which received an Academy Award nomination for Best Animated Feature and became one of the studio's most internationally recognized films, though it diverges significantly from the book's plot and tone in its back half.
