Synopsis

In this fourth volume of the Memoirs of Lady Trent, Isabella and her longtime scientific partner Thomas Wilker are drawn into an unfolding arms race after a rival power begins building airships using technology derived from dragon bone. When Isabella's own government recruits Wilker to travel to the desert nation of Akhia and assist with a military program attempting to breed desert drakes in captivity for their bones, Isabella insists on accompanying him, believing that controlled breeding could spare wild dragon populations from mass slaughter. Once in Akhia, she throws herself into studying the desert drakes' mating habits and egg incubation, even as regional political tensions and figures from her own past complicate both the scientific work and her standing as a woman in a field dominated by men.

Notes

  • From the series record (The Memoirs of Lady Trent): A five-book sequence narrated as the memoirs of a fictional Victorian-analogue naturalist who studies dragons; a companion novel set generations later is treated as a separate spin-off, not part of this Core Canon sequence.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings, but they resolve to the exact same sequence for this book, so one combined line is shown instead of two identical ones.
