Synopsis
In the Shadow of Lightning is the first novel in Brian McClellan's Glass Immortals series, set in an empire whose civilization runs on godglass, a magical resource that is becoming increasingly scarce. Demir Grappo, an exiled grifter who once abandoned his positions as a general, a governor, and a son of one of the empire's most powerful families, is forced to return home after his mother is murdered. Confronted with a family and an inheritance he never wanted, Demir must reclaim his house's seat of power while investigating his mother's death, a search that draws him into the schemes of rival guild-families and questions about the godglass shortage. Gathering unlikely allies, Demir finds himself drawn back into the power and responsibility he had spent years trying to escape.
