Synopsis
Iron Council is the third novel in the Bas-Lag series, set some years after the events of the earlier books Perdido Street Station and The Scar. New Crobuzon is deep into a costly war against the distant city-state of Tesh and is pushing to complete a transcontinental railway as part of its war effort, even as an underground rebellion grows within the city itself. The novel follows three interwoven figures: Judah, a railway scout whose encounter with mystical creatures called the Stiltspear leads him toward the golem-crafting arts; Cutter, who sets out to find a legendary renegade train community known as the Iron Council in order to warn it of an approaching militia; and Ori, a disillusioned young revolutionary drawn into a militant faction plotting against the city's rulers. Their separate paths gradually converge as New Crobuzon's war and internal unrest intensify.
