Overview
Bas-Lag comprises three independent, densely imagined novels by China Miéville set on the world of Bas-Lag, mostly in and around the sprawling, grotesque city of New Crobuzon: a metropolis of rival species, secret police, and Remade convicts fused with machinery. Perdido Street Station (2000), The Scar (2002), and Iron Council (2004) each follow a different cast and story with no shared protagonist or direct continuation, unified instead by setting and by recurring background elements such as the Remaking process and the city's fraught politics. Perdido Street Station won the 2001 Arthur C. Clarke Award and the British Fantasy Award, and The Scar and Iron Council each later won the Arthur C. Clarke Award in their own right, an unusual run of major genre recognition for a single loosely connected sequence. The trilogy is considered a landmark of the New Weird movement, unified by setting rather than plot.
