Overview

Gene Wolfe's The Book of the New Sun (1980–1983, plus a 1987 coda) follows Severian, exiled from the torturers' guild for an act of mercy, across a far-future, dying Earth (Urth) under a fading sun, in dense first-person retrospective narration, as he rises to become Autarch. A 1998 Locus poll ranked the tetralogy 3rd among 36 all-time best fantasy novels published before 1990, behind only The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.
