Synopsis
When the young augur Patera Silk emerges from his exploration of the underground passages of the Whorl, he finds his city of Viron engulfed in revolutionary violence, and himself hailed as leader of the uprising that would make him Caldé, the city's ruler, an office long suspended. Caught in a bloody web of politics and revolution, the god-touched Silk must fight the machinations of the shadowy group that rules Viron, while one of the sibyls of his manteion, Maytera Mint, is seized by revolutionary zeal and leads the people into insurrection, and Silk falls in love with the courtesan Hyacinth. As war threatens his world, the Long Sun itself seems to undergo ominous changes. The third volume of The Book of the Long Sun, a Nebula Award finalist.

Notes
- From the series record (The Book of the Long Sun): Set in the same universe (catalogued together with New Sun and Short Sun as the 'Solar Cycle') but follows a different protagonist, Patera Silk, in a generation ship's enclosed world, standing independently of Severian's story. Registered as Expanded rather than folded into Core: same shared universe, but a separate storyline with no shared protagonist -- Short Sun (below) is what draws the explicit connective line back to Severian.
