Gene Wolfe was born May 7, 1931, in New York City, contracted polio in early childhood, and relocated with his family to Houston, Texas, at age six. He attended Lamar High School and Texas A&M University, where he published early speculative fiction, before dropping out during his junior year after being drafted to serve in the Korean War. He later completed a degree at the University of Houston. Wolfe spent much of his career as an industrial engineer, serving as senior editor for Plant Engineering magazine and notably contributing to the machinery used to manufacture Pringles potato chips, before retiring in 1984 to write full time. He is best known for The Book of the New Sun tetralogy (1980–1983), the centerpiece of his broader "Solar Cycle," which also includes The Book of the Long Sun and The Book of the Short Sun series, alongside acclaimed standalone novels such as Peace and The Fifth Head of Cerberus. Wolfe was named the twenty-ninth Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America Grand Master in 2012, won the World Fantasy Award for Life Achievement in 1996, and was inducted into the Science Fiction Hall of Fame in 2007.
