Synopsis
The Citadel of the Autarch, fourth volume of The Book of the New Sun, picks up immediately after the events of The Sword of the Lictor, finding Severian weakened and defenseless following his earlier encounter with the giant Baldanders and the physician Dr. Talos. Making his way north, he becomes caught up in the Commonwealth's war against the Ascians, joining a military encampment where he takes part in a storytelling competition and is given a mysterious task involving a journey into the mountains. As the fighting intensifies around him, Severian is drawn ever deeper into the political and military upheaval surrounding the war, his path increasingly bound up with questions of fate, power, and his own uncertain place in the Commonwealth.
