Synopsis
Patera Silk, a dedicated young augur of the decaying city of Viron, has made a pact with the wealthy and sinister Blood in an attempt to ransom his parish from its creditors. In doing so he embarks on a quest that begins to reveal to him the hidden secrets and true nature of his world, a huge generation starship, the Whorl, lit and warmed by the artificial Long Sun, and uncovers a larger conspiracy involving Viron's government and even the gods he worships. His search takes him to Lake Limna and a shrine that conceals an entrance to the ship's subsurface passages, to rooms with strange machines, stranger beings and windows. Emerging with his new knowledge, he finds himself chosen as Caldé, leader of the people, and at the same time arrested. The second volume of The Book of the Long Sun.

Notes
- From the series record (The Book of the Long Sun): Set in the same universe (catalogued together with New Sun and Short Sun as the 'Solar Cycle') but follows a different protagonist, Patera Silk, in a generation ship's enclosed world, standing independently of Severian's story. Registered as Expanded rather than folded into Core: same shared universe, but a separate storyline with no shared protagonist -- Short Sun (below) is what draws the explicit connective line back to Severian.
