Synopsis

Eight stories set in the Old Kingdom, ranging in tone from the mystical to the martial, the poetic and the comic. They tell of the howls that haunt Leodegar the Resplendent every night in his palace, of the peasant girl Suzelle's disenchantment at the cruelty of life, of the panic of Master Calame the copyist in the face of curses, and of Benvenuto, a hired killer caught up in a political intrigue far beyond him, the story the novel Gagner la guerre would go on to continue. Touch by touch, the stories reveal the history and workings of a fully imagined medieval world.
