Synopsis
Jurgen: A Comedy of Justice, published in 1919, follows Jurgen, a middle-aged pawnbroker and disillusioned former poet living in the medieval kingdom of Poictesme, who unexpectedly speaks a kind word in defense of the Devil and is rewarded with a chance to relive his youth. Restored to his younger self, Jurgen sets out on a series of fantastical wanderings through invented realms including Glathion, Cocaigne, and Leuke, encountering figures drawn from myth, legend, and his own philosophical musings on love, justice, and human folly. His travels eventually carry him beyond these earthly kingdoms into Hell and Heaven themselves, where he engages various authorities, mortal and divine, in the same wry, self-justifying debates that characterize his journey throughout. The novel combines picaresque fantasy adventure with satirical commentary on morality and desire, following Jurgen's episodic encounters across a string of increasingly strange realms.
