Overview
A standalone 1919 comic fantasy novel following a disillusioned pawnbroker who is granted a magical reprieve from middle age and travels through a series of legendary and invented realms in pursuit of his lost wife and his own youth. James Branch Cabell's Jurgen: A Comedy of Justice is part of his larger Biography of Manuel cycle, though it stands independently and is by far its best-known installment. Its frank sexual innuendo, disguised through elaborate wordplay and euphemism, led the New York Society for the Suppression of Vice to bring an obscenity case against the publisher in 1920; the eventual acquittal made the novel a landmark early-twentieth-century free-speech case and dramatically boosted its sales and notoriety. The novel's blend of mock-medieval romance, mythology, and satire of contemporary morality made it a major influence on later ironic, self-aware fantasy writing.
