Synopsis
The fifth novel finds James Stark searching Los Angeles for a powerful, god-killing weapon he lost track of earlier in his adventures, a weapon that every other supernatural faction in the city is also racing to claim. The hunt draws him toward an abandoned, half-mythical mall known as Kill City, a refuge for the city's stranger and more dangerous fringe-dwellers. Stark's time as an unwilling ruler of Hell has left its mark on him, and the book follows how that experience has begun to reshape him from a purely vengeful fighter into someone starting to be capable of real attachment and trust, even as he is pulled into the kind of high-stakes chase that has defined his life since his escape from Hell.

Notes
- From the series record (Sandman Slim): Complete 12-novel urban-fantasy sequence (2009-2021) following James Stark, a magician who escaped an eleven-year exile in Hell to hunt down the people who murdered his girlfriend and sent him there, working cases across a supernatural Los Angeles. "Devil in the Dollhouse" (2012), a novella slotting between books 3 and 4, is kept out of Core as companion material, not one of the twelve main-sequence novels.
