Synopsis
In the sixth novel, James Stark is reluctantly drawn into working with the Golden Vigil again, this time to investigate a string of murders in Los Angeles as an unnatural, ominous storm gathers over the city. The killings turn out to be connected to the oldest and most dangerous faction competing for ultimate control of the universe, and Stark's investigation forces him deeper into a conflict that goes well beyond a single case. Balancing his obligations to the Vigil against his own instincts, Stark tries to protect the fragile found-family of allies and the parts of the city he has come to consider his own, even as the storm and the killings suggest that something much larger than a simple murder spree is at stake for Los Angeles and possibly for the fate of Creation itself.

Notes
- From the series record (Sandman Slim): Complete 12-novel urban-fantasy sequence (2009-2021) following James Stark, a magician who escaped an eleven-year exile in Hell to hunt down the people who murdered his girlfriend and sent him there, working cases across a supernatural Los Angeles. "Devil in the Dollhouse" (2012), a novella slotting between books 3 and 4, is kept out of Core as companion material, not one of the twelve main-sequence novels.
