Synopsis

In the seventh novel, James Stark faces a much-changed life in the aftermath of the previous book's events: the woman he loved is gone from his life and his usual ability to walk between worlds through magical doors has been curtailed. Turning away from his old role as a supernatural enforcer, Stark sets himself up as a private investigator, taking on ordinary cases to get by. His first case is anything but ordinary, however, when he is hired to look into the murder of Death itself, a job that pulls him back into contact with the angelic and infernal power players he had hoped to leave behind. The investigation forces Stark to adapt his usual violent methods to something closer to detective work, even as old enemies take notice of his return to the field.

Notes

  • From the series record (Sandman Slim): Complete 12-novel urban-fantasy sequence (2009-2021) following James Stark, a magician who escaped an eleven-year exile in Hell to hunt down the people who murdered his girlfriend and sent him there, working cases across a supernatural Los Angeles. "Devil in the Dollhouse" (2012), a novella slotting between books 3 and 4, is kept out of Core as companion material, not one of the twelve main-sequence novels.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings, but they resolve to the exact same sequence for this book, so one combined line is shown instead of two identical ones.
