Synopsis
Kitty Norville, her husband Ben and Ben's cousin Cormac travel to San Francisco on a job given to them by a powerful vampire. The task is to keep a dangerous artifact out of the hands of Roman, the ancient vampire who has opposed Kitty for years. The trip starts with a small puzzle about whether a famous nineteenth-century general was a werewolf, and then moves into a larger conflict in which old legends turn out to be real and the vampires' long-running scheme begins to come into view.
