Synopsis

Tristia is a nation overcome by intrigue and corruption. The idealistic young King Paelis is dead and the Greatcoats have been branded traitors, but before his execution the king swore each of his hundred and forty-four Greatcoats to a different mission. Falcio val Mond, their First Cantor, has completed his own with the help of Kest and Brasti: he has found the king's heir, though she is not quite what anyone expected, and now the three must protect the girl from the many who want her dead and place her on the throne of a lawless kingdom. A few days after the horrifying murder of a duke and his family, Falcio sets out to capture the killer, but his own life is in mortal danger from a poison administered as a final act of revenge by one of his deadliest enemies, and as civil war begins to engulf the country he has precious little time left.
