Synopsis

Kushiel's Dart opens the Phedre trilogy within Jacqueline Carey's Kushiel's Legacy series, set in Terre d'Ange, an alternate, medieval-flavored version of France whose people trace their descent from the god Elua and the companion angels who abandoned heaven to follow him, living by his one precept, love as thou wilt. The novel follows Phedre no Delaunay, the unwanted, flawed daughter of a courtesan, who is sold into indentured servitude as a child and later trained by her guardian Anafiel Delaunay as a courtesan and spy skilled in the arts of pleasure and observation. Marked as an anguissette, a rare individual for whom pain and pleasure are intertwined, Phedre uses her unusual gifts and her education in court intrigue to gather secrets among the poets, nobles, and foreign envoys of Terre d'Ange.

Notes

  • From the series record (The Phèdre Trilogy): The flagship trilogy, following Phèdre nó Delaunay, a courtesan and spy marked as Kushiel's Chosen, in Terre d'Ange, a medieval Western European-inspired fantasy world descended from Blessed Elua and fallen angels -- historical fantasy/alternate history.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.

  • Publication order, within the series The Phèdre Trilogy: position 1 of 3: next Kushiel's Chosen (2002)
  • Internal chronology, within Kushiel's Legacy: position 1 of 9: next Kushiel's Chosen (2002)
