Synopsis

In November 1339, Pierre Cordwain de Kosigan, known as the Bastard, arrives in Champagne. He is a knight and assassin who leads a company of elite mercenaries, and he has been cut off from his powerful Burgundian family, which still pursues him. He hires out his men, his gifts and his talent for manipulation to the great houses of Europe. Champagne is the last domain of the elven princesses of Aëlenwil, and his presence there worries several camps. Between tournaments, diplomatic errands and court intrigue, his actions appear to serve a much larger design whose nature remains unclear. The novel mixes Anglo-Saxon-style fantasy with the history of France, in a humorous tone.
