Synopsis
On Midsummer’s Eve, tradition says, a bowl of milk should be left out for the fairies. Fred Barber, an American diplomat recovering in the Yorkshire countryside during the Second World War, drinks the milk meant for them and leaves a substitute, and the rightful recipient, drunk and offended, takes revenge by carrying him off to the Land of Faerie as a changeling, a fate usually kept for infants. Barber, a practical man who believes only what he sees, finds himself at the court of King Oberon and Queen Titania among elves, sprites and goblins living matter-of-factly in a world of magic. To earn his way home he must undertake a mission for Oberon in a realm beset by a menace that echoes the war in his own world, and where nothing turns out as expected, least of all Barber himself.
